Aromatherapy History

The ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils. Nearly 6000 years ago, the Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing, massage and for embalming the dead.

Cleopatra, known for her beautiful skin was said to use essential oils in her baths. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used aromatherapy baths and scented massage among his treatments. Hippocrates also used aromatic fumigations to rid Athens of the plague.

Roman historian Pliny, author of the impressive 1st-century A.D. Natural History, mentioned 32 different remedies prepared from rose, 21 remedies prepared from lily, 17 remedies prepared from violet and 25 remedies prepared from pennyroyal.

Aromatherapy Facts & Info

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, absolute oils and hydrosols. For some uses aromatherapy may include the use fragrance oils. Aromatherapy is an off-shoot of herbology. The use of aromatherapy may be best known in these areas:

  • Skin Care or Aesthetic – effects essential oils have on skin and hair care.
  • Emotional or Psycho – aromas are known to have effects on our emotions, moods and feelings; aka aromachology.
  • Holistic or Spiritual Healing – the combination the spiritual healing with the body, mind and soul.
  • Medical or Healing – the effects essential oils have in healing, enhancing and maintaining good health.

The word Aromatherapy was coined in the 1920’s by French perfumer Rene Gattefosse.

Aromatherapy has been used for over 6000 years. The Chinese were perhaps the first culture to use aromatic plants for well-being. They burned incense to create harmony and balance.
