Three Muses

The Three Muses – from whose name Music came.

Originally there were 9 Goddesses who were the patron Goddesses of the Arts:

  • Clio – History
  • Calliope – Epic Poetry
  • Erato – Love Poetry
  • Euterpe – Lyric Poetry
  • Melpomene – Tragedy
  • Polyhymnia – Song
  • Thalia – Comedy
  • Terpsichore – Dancing
  • Urania – Astrology 

The Three Muses were also referred to as The Three Graces. 

In Greek Mythology they were the daughters of Hera and Zeus:

  • Euphrosyne – Joyfullness
  • Aglaia – Brightness
  • Thalia – Bloom

The Three Muses presided over the Arts and Sciences. They were said to inspire those who excelled in the Arts.
