The Three Muses

The Three Muses - from whose name Music came.


Originally there were 9 Goddesses who were the patron Goddesses of the Arts.

Clio - History; Calliope - Epic Poetry; Erato - Love Poetry; 
Euterpe - Lyric Poetry; Melpomene - Tragedy; Polyhymnia - Song;
Thalia - Comedy; Terpsichore - Dancing; and Urania - Astrology.
 
The Three Muses were also referred to as The Three Graces. 
In Greek Mythology they were the daughters of Hera and Zeus;
Euphrosyne - Joyfullness; Aglaia - Brightness; and Thalia - Bloom.
The Three Muses presided over the Arts and Sciences. 
They were said to inspire those who excelled in the Arts.
