Originally there were 9 Goddesses who were the patron Goddesses of the Arts.
- Clio - History; Calliope - Epic Poetry; Erato - Love Poetry;
- Euterpe - Lyric Poetry; Melpomene - Tragedy; Polyhymnia - Song;
Thalia - Comedy; Terpsichore - Dancing; and Urania - Astrology.

- The Three Muses were also referred to as The Three Graces.
- In Greek Mythology they were the daughters of Hera and Zeus;
Euphrosyne - Joyfullness; Aglaia - Brightness; and Thalia - Bloom.
- The Three Muses presided over the Arts and Sciences.
- They were said to inspire those who excelled in the Arts.
